Grayson County was created by the Texas Legislature on March 17, 1846, from territory previously included in Fannin County. It was named for Peter Wagener Grayson, an attorney general of the Republic of Texas and prominent figure in the Texas independence era. The act creating the county also provided for a county seat named Sherman. Agriculture shaped much of the county's early economy before railroad development accelerated growth in the 1870s. The creation of Lake Texoma in the 1940s added a major recreation, tourism and water resource along the county's northern boundary.
