Sherman is the county seat of Grayson County and one of the principal communities of North Texas and the Texoma region. The city combines a historic downtown, Austin College, parks, arts and entertainment, restaurants, shopping, community events and growing commercial development. Sherman was founded in 1846 by the Grayson County commissioners and named for General Sidney Sherman, a hero of the Texas Revolution. The original townsite was approximately four miles west of the present city, but a lack of wood and water led to Sherman's relocation to its present site in 1848. Sherman was incorporated in 1858. The city developed as an important commercial, governmental, educational and transportation center, with Austin College moving to Sherman in 1876 and numerous other educational institutions helping establish the city's historic reputation as an educational center.
