About Terrell-Griggs-Marshall Legacy Park

Terrell-Griggs-Marshall Legacy Park is a historic neighborhood park in Denison commemorating three influential figures connected to the city's African American heritage: educator and community leader Augustus H. Terrell, author and minister Sutton E. Griggs, and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. The park occupies the former site of historic Hopewell Baptist Church, a congregation founded in 1874 to serve Denison's Black community. A Texas historical marker at the site preserves the church's story, including Thurgood Marshall's 1950 appearance there when Hopewell hosted an NAACP regional convention. Today the property serves both as a neighborhood park and as an important physical reminder of Denison's African American and civil-rights history.
