About Fort Washita Historic Site & Museum
Fort Washita Historic Site & Museum preserves one of southern Oklahoma's most significant military and First American historic sites. Established in 1842 as the southwesternmost United States military post, Fort Washita was created to help maintain peace and fulfill federal treaty obligations to the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations in Indian Territory. Visitors can explore restored 19th-century structures, historic ruins and interpretive exhibits while learning about frontier life, tribal history, military activity and the Civil War. The Chickasaw Nation owns and manages the site and also presents living-history programs, reenactments, storytelling, outdoor movies, seasonal events and the annual Fur Trade Era Rendezvous.

Current Chickasaw Nation information is inconsistent by 30 minutes: the current Fort Washita program page lists Tuesday-Saturday 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, while the Chickasaw Nation location page and Chickasaw Country currently list 9:00 AM-4:30 PM. TWG uses the more conservative 4:00 PM closing time and recommends calling ahead if planning to arrive late in the day.
